This course is a foundation course that is reading and writing heavy and focuses on critical thinking skills with the following: Reading various important texts from the Civil Rights Movement and the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" to help craft informative writing and presentations about this important era in American history. Students will then delve into the theme of fate and destiny by reading Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet". They will also read the novel "The Fault in Our Stars" as a means of comparing modern texts with Shakespearean texts and presenting this information in an argumentative text, presentation, and debate. Finally, students will read the futuristic novel "Fahrenheit 451" and write their own short stories that deal with themes of the past and the future colliding.
