ELA Foundations of English I

This course is to be taken by English Learners who are new to the English language. Students will learn the basics of the English language in all four domains - reading, writing, speaking, and listening - to prepare them for learning in their mainstream content courses. Vocabulary covered will include both academic and social language, being able to express one’s self in both verbal and written form. There is also a strong emphasis on basic reading skills and phonics. Students are enrolled in this class by teacher recommendation only. Placement is also based on their WIDA screener (language screener test) score and WIDA ACCESS score.
