Students build on the work they were introduced to in 6th and 8th grades, working with descriptive statistics and linear modeling. Data are gathered, displayed, summarized, examined, and interpreted to discover patterns and deviations from patterns. Quantitative data can be described in terms of key characteristics: measures of shape, center, and spread. Students decide if a scatter plot is best modeled by a linear relationship using a correlation coefficient and interpret the meaning of the parameters in the linear model. They examine residuals when comparing observed values to predicted values. Students will also create quadratic and exponential models from scatter plots based on shape and context, which connects to work they did in Functions under the domain of Linear, Exponential and Quadratic Models.
